Imagine a world where the word stroke didn’t make you shutter. Strokes are the leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States, with 7 million stroke survivors, two thirds of whom are disabled. Must it remain this way?

The University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) doesn’t think so. This June, the UAB will open the first of its kind Rehabilitation Pavilion. This 11-story, state-of-the-art stroke care facility features 78 rehabilitation beds, advanced technology, and several acute care nursing units. It has the potential to reshape treatment on a global scale!

And, it will revolutionize stroke care in the region. Did you know that studies show that patients who arrive at the emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms often have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who receive delayed care. Just imagine what impact this facility can have on preventing long-term disability outcomes within the surrounding area.

See the Rehabilitation Pavilion construction in progress in this time-lapse video.

To make the new facility a success, UAB is looking to bring on highly skilled talent to support their mission and advance research and care for stroke patients. If this sounds interesting to you, reach out to us today or read on to learn more about UAB, the Birmingham community and the benefits of working in Academic medicine.

Why Work in Academic Medicine?

Working in academic medicine offers a dynamic and fulfilling career that combines patient care, research, and education. Physicians and healthcare professionals in this field have the opportunity to stay at the forefront of medical advancements, contribute to groundbreaking research, and shape the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Here are a few other common benefits:

  • The pace within academic medicine is often more conducive to the patient experience and care medical professionals prefer. Where in a large organization, there may be quotas of patients to see, within academic medicine there is usually more time for one-to-one attention.
  • Academic institutions often provide support for securing research funding and grant resources. Opportunities enable you to advance your work in neurorehabilitation and improve patient outcomes.
  • Access to a diverse patient population and the resources to explore innovative treatment approaches. With emerging therapies, the possibilities for groundbreaking research are vast.
  • A collaborative approach to working with an interdisciplinary team ensures part of a holistic care model. Addressing not just the neuropsychological aspect of the individual but also emotional health contributes to overall recovery.

All of these are great reasons that make academic medicine a rewarding path for those passionate about advancing healthcare and making a lasting impact.
