As a healthcare recruiter, you play a critical role in helping organizations find and hire the best talent. And in a highly competitive industry with over 132,000 healthcare recruiters employed in the United States, it’s essential to stay ahead of the curve and develop the skills and knowledge necessary to gain a competitive edge against other recruiters in the healthcare space.

What better place to go to find reputable recruiting tips than straight from the source?

Here, we offer five of our best tips for becoming a successful healthcare recruiter. Whether you’ve already made a mark in the industry or are breaking into recruiting for the first time, this article offers key takeaways for you.

Pro Tip #1: Develop a Deep Understanding of the Healthcare Industry

To be a successful healthcare recruiter, it’s essential to have a deep understanding of the industry—including knowledge of industry trends, regulations and best practices. This knowledge is something you will naturally gain over time in the field but spending time to develop this understanding outside of work (especially if you’re new to the industry) will be a good practice to get into.

For more experiential learners, attending conferences offers the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, connect with peers and gain valuable insights that can help you in your career.

Or, if you’re someone who learns better on their own, reading industry publications is a great way to stay up to date on the latest developments in healthcare. We recommend industry publications like HealthLeaders, Becker’s Hospital Review, and even our catalog of blog posts over the years as a starting point.

Pro Tip #2: Build a Strong Network of Healthcare Professionals

Even if you’re not much of an extrovert or experiential learner like we talked about above, building a strong network of healthcare professionals will still be another key to success in establishing yourself as a healthcare recruiter. Attending industry events and conferences is an obvious way to meet new people and connect with other professionals in the industry, but there are plenty of ways to do this virtually as well if in-person connection isn’t accessible to you.

Social media can also be a powerful tool for building your network—especially LinkedIn. There are dozens of specialty groups on LinkedIn related to healthcare that allow you to connect with other professionals in the field. Outside of social media, professional organizations, such as the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) and the National Association of Physician Recruiters (NAPR). Joining organizations like these will not only provide you with access to exclusive job postings, training and development opportunities—but also, a network of peers, mentors, and industry camaraderie.

Pro Tip #3: Utilize Technology and Tools

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but technology and tools will definitely play a major role in streamlining your search.

Job search engines like Indeed and Glassdoor are mainstays for a reason. They have been proven for years to be valuable resources for identifying job openings in the healthcare industry, especially with their advanced search features to find opportunities that match your skills and experience.

And then, there’s social media platforms of course. LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook can be used beyond networking—they can also serve as valuable tools for identifying job openings and connecting with recruiters, especially LinkedIn. Follow healthcare recruiting firms and healthcare organizations to stay informed about the latest job openings.

But there are other places to take your search outside of the “normal” platforms, too. Consider exploring online professional networks, such as Doximity and HealthLink which allow you to connect with healthcare professionals and organizations in your field and provide you with access to exclusive job postings.

Pro Tip #4: Develop Strong Interviewing Skills

No matter what level you’re at in your profession, developing strong interview skills will always be essential to furthering your career. Just like most things in life, it takes dedicated focus and practice getting your reps in to master the art of a stellar interview. You only have seven seconds to make a good first impression, so it really does benefit you in the long run to go in well-prepared.

We recommend practicing with colleagues or loved ones, and to study up on the qualities that your companies of interest look for in their employees, so that you walk into every interview feeling prepared and confident in how you show up.

Pro Tip #5: Get Clear on Your Values and Ideal Work Culture

Last but certainly not least, cultural fit is an essential consideration during your job search. As a candidate, it’s essential to assess the organization’s culture and values to ensure that it’s a good fit for you—but to do that, first you must get clear on your own core values and what your ideal work culture looks like.

Is flexibility your priority?
Collaboration between teams?
Perhaps a robust benefits package?

There are many pieces that make up a company’s work culture, and before committing to your next role (or even applying for a job), it’s beneficial for everyone involved to ensure your personal values, goals and workplace culture preferences are aligned with the organizations to which you’re applying.
